Unfortunately, many maintenance departments have never had the opportunity of operating a facility that is not burdened with equipment that is both broken and dirty. In most cases they have simply learned how to operate the building from their predecessor. That means that learning how to compensate for deficiencies continues to get passed from generation to generation. The following sign was once seen in a high school shop class:
Every time one of our servicemen is working in a facility, we encourage the active participation of the in-house personnel. Our goal is to form an effective partnership with the people working with the system day in and day out. That means no secrets! Therefore, as we, together in partnership, work to fix what's broken and clean what's dirty, we believe your maintenance personnel should be afforded every opportunity to learn how to operate a facility that no longer has to cover up for basic system deficiencies. When you "do" you "understand".
